A website is not “set and forget.” A little regular upkeep keeps it fast, secure and ranking well. Here is a simple maintenance routine — weekly, monthly and yearly.
Every week
- Confirm the site loads and key pages work.
- Check that contact and booking forms still deliver.
- Make sure a recent backup exists.
- Install security and plugin updates.
- Skim analytics for anything unusual.
Every month
- Run a full backup and test that it actually restores.
- Scan for broken links and fix 404s.
- Check page speed and Core Web Vitals.
- Update software, themes and dependencies.
- Review Search Console for errors and coverage issues.
Every quarter / year
- Renew your domain and SSL certificate (or confirm auto-renew).
- Refresh outdated content, prices and copyright year.
- Review SEO performance and update underperforming pages.
- Audit security: passwords, user accounts and permissions.
- Revisit the design — does it still feel current?
Red flags to act on immediately
- Sudden drop in traffic or rankings.
- Browser security warnings (often an expired SSL).
- Slow or failing pages.
- Spam content or unexpected admin users.
